Live Drawing: Charcoal Portraits

It is time to show my progress in live drawing sessions I’ve been taking at Art Center in Groningen BK050 since last September. As I had no previous experience with live drawing before and no idea about charcoal as a drawing medium, I was really excited to try them all out. You can view my post about sketches from the first lesson on my old blog.

There’s been a lot of wonderful models and challenging exersises since that first lesson and I enjoyed every one of them. I think I’ve made about 50 small and big, simple and elaborate drawings during this course and I wanted to show you some of them that I like. Here are two 25 minute charcoal drawings in “line art” style from the beginning of the course:

These are two 40 minute drawings created by wiping out the layer of charcoal from the black-coated paper (lots of fun!) from the middle part of the course:

And here is a portrait I created on the last lesson of the course – 2 hour drawing of the lovely model Sonya:

I think it is my favorite ;) The drawing is rather big… Paper size 50 x 60 cm. Here it is taped to my brand new studio easel (so exited about it!!!):

Can’t wait to paint something on my new easel! :)

By the way, I also have some “live painting” acrylic portraits to share… Coming up!
